Alan Pimm-Smith, BA (First Class Honours), English literature,The University of Western Australia; MA, English literature, London University.

Alan has wide experience both as a journalist and English language teacher. Apart from working as a newspaper reporter and magazine editor, he has also worked in the field of Public Relations in the Middle East, writing promotional material and company Annual Reports. A recent article of his on the derivation of English words from Arabic can be found on a US government website at this link.

Mark Ashton SmithMark Ashton Smith, Ph.D. Mark is a double honours graduate in philosophy and psychology from Bristol University, England. He obtained his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and neuroscience from the joint Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh University.

Between October 2000 and September 2003 Mark was a lecturer in psychology at the University of Cambridge, England. Mark has held university positions in both the Middle East and Turkey. His most recent position has been as Assistant Professor at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey’s highest ranking private research university. He has published in peer reviewed academic journals and books, and taught extensively to students for whom English is a second language.

Apostrophes

The difference between "its" and "it's".

" Its " is a possessive like "his" and "her". 

For example: "As the car rounded the bend its left wheel fell off."

(As he got out of the car his shoe fell off.")

" It's " is a contraction of "it is". 

For example: " It's cold outside."
